Chapter Fourteen

Lena

“You’re quiet.”

I glanced up from the gravel beneath our feet to look at Clyde. “Sorry.”

“Don’t be. I’m just used to you talkin’ more.”

I couldn’t help the smile tugging at my lips. “Miss my constant chatter?”

Clyde shot me a crooked grin that almost made me trip over my own feet. “Yeah, kinda. I like listening to you talk.”

My heart fluttered so hard it hurt. How was he so effortlessly sweet? It was almost like he didn’t even mean to compliment me, it just happened.

I wanted this ice cream date to be about us, but I couldn’t stop thinking about my babies. “I’m sorry,” I said again. “I’m trying to think of an adult topic of conversation, but all that’s coming to mind is poopy diapers and baby drool. This mom thing has completely warped my brain, and now all I can talk about are Lachlan and Lennox.”

Clyde chuckled. “It’s okay. I like talking about them too. Did you see the picture I got of little bro earlier? He fit his whole freaking fist in his mouth!”

My head fell back with a laugh of my own. “I saw that. It was just as impressive as it was disturbing.”

“I mean, we already knew he had a big mouth, but I didn’t know it was that big.”

“Ugh, he does have a big mouth, doesn’t he? Every single time I leave them to use the bathroom, someone starts screaming bloody murder. Can you guess who it is?”

“Lennox.”

“It’s Lennox,” I confirmed with a laugh.

“Yeah, he’s got a set of lungs on him. One time I heard him screaming all the way from the second floor landing. I thought I was losing my mind because the rooms are so soundproofed, but it just got louder as I got closer. I couldn’t believe it.”

I shook my head and sighed. “Yeah, I’m in trouble with that one.”

“Really? Because I’d take Lennox’s screams over Lachlan’s shits any day.”

I pressed my lips together to hold back a laugh. “They are pretty freaking toxic.”

“Toxic?” Clyde yelled. “Try nuclear. I almost threw up yesterday.”

A giggled spilled from my lips as I gave him a shove. “No, you didn’t.”

“I swear to you I almost lost my lunch. You weren’t even there! You were taking a shower when he shit. It was fucking nasty.”

I laughed even harder when I caught the disgusted look on his face. “I swear formula poops are worse than the breast milk poops used to be.”

Clyde’s whole body shook like he was trying to get the stench off him, and I couldn’t stop giggling. His dark eyes swung my way and immediately softened.

He held my gaze for a moment before he shook his head and pointed behind me. “I’ve gotta pick up my car.”

I frowned at him, my brain too fuzzy to understand. “Huh?”

Clyde’s smile grew. “The mechanic just finished fixing my old Chevelle. He hasn’t had time to do the paint and shit yet, but I thought we could take it to go get ice cream today.”

“I’m not sure if I know what a Chevelle is.
